Gather your ingredients: White Sandwich Bread, American Cheese, and Unsalted Butter.
Soften the Unsalted Butter if needed and spread a thin, even layer on one side of each slice of White Sandwich Bread. The buttered sides will be the outside of the sandwich.
Place one or two slices of American Cheese between the unbuttered sides of the two bread slices so the buttered sides face out.
Heat a nonstick skillet or griddle over medium-low heat until warm. Medium-low helps the cheese melt before the bread over-browns.
Put the sandwich in the skillet and cook for 2–4 minutes until the bottom is golden brown. Press gently with a spatula or cover the pan briefly to encourage the cheese to melt.
Flip the sandwich and cook another 2–4 minutes until the second side is golden and the cheese is fully melted.
Transfer the sandwich to a cutting board, let it rest for about 1 minute, then slice and serve immediately.
